The motor home is a term that is commonly used in the United Kingdom to describe a recreational vehicle or RV as they are known in America, and is unique in that it offers transport and living quarters in one vehicle as oppose to a caravan.
Along with a towed home like a caravan the motor home is also commonly confused with camper vans which usually differ by being smaller and more lightweight, and also lacking the bathroom features that all motor homes contain like toilets and showers. Motor homes are unique in that everything you need it located conveniently in one vehicle.
The history of the motor home can be dated roughly back to the 1920’s where a few companies started to experiment with converting existing vehicles to become an early example of the motor home. The Jennings company and Bertram Hutchings worked at creating early motor homes but both were rather odd looking hybrids.
Moving forward to the 1950’s which was around the time the motor home started to gain momentum with a handful of companies beginning to create specialist vehicles. Many of these companies are still around today and some of the early frontrunners were Volkswagen, Ford, Dormobiles and Westfalia.
In the late 1950’s and 1960’s many other companies with a history is vehicle manufacture joined the party producing motor home vehicles in larger numbers. Today there are over 90 manufacturers of motor homes in the United Kingdom from companies like Fiat and Swift.
