Gloucestershire is a lovely place to visit on a motorhome hire holiday and you should make time to visit the county town which is the city of Gloucester and other principal towns such as Cheltenham, Cirencester, Stroud, and maybe Tewkesbury as well.
Gloucestershire is a very affluent, green, pleasant and relaxed county, the type of place you see in American movies as being typically British and is an ideal place for family holidays.
Gloucester is the main county town in Gloucestershire and there is plenty to see and do in this historic water fronted city, there is enough in the city to keep you occupied on it's own merits, but it is only a short motorhome drive from the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean so you have a lot of options to keep your motorhome holiday interesting and varied.
Gloucestershire is famous for making cheese and butter and is mainly agricultural in it's industry with wheat being the main grain crop, along with oats and barley. The county is also well known for it's excellent pear and apple orchards which are cultivated to produce great cider and perry and other well known industries include cloth manufacture, furniture, glass and pottery makers
Touring in your holiday motorhome through Gloucestershire is a delight as you can drive through small stone villages and be part of the stunning countryside.
The main towns that are situated in the county of Gloucestershire are Badmington, Wotton-under-Edge, Tetbury, Dursley, Cirencester, Lechlade, Bibury, Stroud, Northleach, Brockworth, Cheltenham, Stow on the Wold, Chipping Campden, Tewkesbury, Gloucester(Main City), Coleford and Lydney.
Towns that we have visted in Gloucestershire on our motorhome holiday and loved were Bourton-on-the-Water, Cheltenham, Stow-on-the-Wold, Tewkesbury, and The Slaughters. Many of places we visited had magnificent views over the River Severn and stunning Countryside settings.
Gloucester is a very historic place and is home to some well preserved Roman foundations and there is the Victorian Docklands and the magnificent Norman Cathedral that you can visit to get feel for the history of this wonderful city.
Gloucestershire has alot to offer the motorhome holiday maker and just some of the many attractions that are worth a mention include Berkeley Castle and Tewkesbury Abbey.
Berkeley Castle was built to keep out the Welsh and is a truly scary place, the designers were pretty security conscious and built huge barred doors, trip steps designed to make enemy soldiers trip during an attack, murder holes and arrow slits to name but a few of the pleasant things in store for any intruders. However don't let this put you off visiting this wonderful castle as it is surprisingly beautiful at sunset when the stone glows and makes it look like a fairytale castle from the outside.
Tewkesbury Abbey is a wonderful parish church that is set in a small market near to Gloucester. It was built many years ago and has been dated back to the 1100s, which is pretty old in anyone’s book! The abbey church not only has the biggest Norman tower in the world but also proudly boasts the largest exterior arch in the whole of Britain. It is worth going inside the Abbey to see Its beautiful interior that contains Norman pillars and round arches with Gothic decorations.
Why not take a break from cooking in your motorhome and make a date to eat out, we would advise you to visit the Wharf House restaurant in the county town which is well situated for a motorhome drive from both Cheltenham and Gloucester and is just opposite the Telford bridge on the western edge of Gloucester. The food we ate here was delicious and we were told that the owners try to source everything locally and only buy the freshest ingredients.
Another option that is open to you would be to visit Gloucester Quays which is home to Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet Centre and the Gloucester Antiques Centre. If you are a style junkie and like fashion love style and fashion at a good price then this is the place to go. Shops include Gap, The White Company, Next and there are the usual bars and restaurants to choose from such as Nando’s, Pizza Express, Costa or Café Nero which are all great places to go on your motorhome holiday.
Shopping in the Gloucestershire is very, very enjoyable even for someone like me who hates shopping and would rather be driving in the motorhome. There are lots and I mean lots of individual shops that you used to find in most town centres before the arrival of the big chains, and the region has a bit of a reputation as Arts and Crafts paradise as well as having a wide range of antique shops selling ceramic ware, paintings and furniture from both English artists and people from around the world. I would rank Gloucestershire as one of my favourite places to shop in the whole of the UK
The Greenway Farm Camping & Caravan Site at Drybrook is an family owned, five star, 5 acre site in a great location for the counties attractions, the campsite boasts 55 touring pitches, 22 with electric hook up and lovely paddocks.
Hoburne Cotswold in Cirencester would be another excellent choice which provides first class accommodation that is based around a wonderful lake with many water-based activities available. The campsite also has a Licensed Lakeside Club & family lounge with entertainment at peak season & Bank Holidays and an Indoor leisure pool with flume, sauna & steam room and much much more.
Gloucestershire is a fantastic place for a motorhome holiday and has alot to offer the motorhome holiday maker and it is very well suited to people who enjoy the countryside and seeing beautiful villages that are steeped in history, so if you want to see the England that all the Americans love and rave about then you can't go far wrong than a trip or holiday in beautiful Gloucestershire

Custom motorhomes were being built in the start of last century but its not until about 30 years later that motorhomes were mass produced. Early motorhomes wouldn't have had the traditional features we know nowadays. It was only after the mid 20th century that motorhome production became more widespread when three main companies started production.
Motorhome quality gets better every year with the manufacturers finding new ways of getting the most out of their designs. A common type of motorhome in use is the C-class or Coachbuilt style which has a double bed built over the driving cab and usually features more sleeping facilities in the rear of the vehicle. Fully fitted kitchen and dining areas can provide you with the ability to feed an entire family in comfort.
